Houston Ranked Low on Apartment List Satisfaction Survey

by James Bellandi

rsz_house12Houston was ranked on No. 84 out of 100 on Apartment List’s Renter Satisfaction Survey, released early this month. The survey, which polled over 18,000 renters, asked renters to rate their city based on a series of factors.

Houston, the lowest ranked Texas city on the list, received high marks in some categories such as confidence in the economy and state and local taxes. However, safety and crime, quality of schools and access to recreational activities all brought the city down to a D rank overall. This is concurrent with our other findings about how Houston’s rental market is slowing down. Trulia also found that it was 46 percent cheaper to buy than rent in Houston, further slowing down the renting market.

“The US renter population is at its highest level in 20 years,” says Andrew Tam, Vice President of Data Science at Apartment List, “and renter concerns with Houston’s crime rate and access to recreation may affect its ability to attract this demographic.”
