Buyers will choose pets over dream home

by Kyle Scheuring

A recent Realtor.com survey of more than 1,000 new homeowners concludes that pet ownership plays a vital role in selecting a home.

Most pet owners consider their furry, feathered, or scaly friends as family, but 75 percent of pet-owning buyers say they would even give up their dream home if it did not accommodate their pets.

Nearby access to nature, large yards, garages and other pet-friendly features have become a huge factor in buying a house for those age 18 to 34. Even if they will not pass on their dream home because of their pet, 87 percent of homebuyers said they took their pet needs into account while choosing a house.

Although pet needs are important primarily to younger owners, the survey finds that 89 percent of buyers with kids say their pet’s needs were important, but only 72 percent of those without children said the same.

Buyers are not just looking for dog and cat friendly homes either, horses, rodents and birds are also accounted for by owners. Reptile owners are particularly mindful with 98 percent saying their pet’s needs were important to their home search.

“It’s heartwarming to find that people will put their pets’ needs first, even when it comes to one of the biggest financial decisions they will ever make,” said Nate Johnson, chief marketing officer for realtor.com. “This survey shows that we really do consider pets part of the family — and that their needs are a critical part of finding the perfect home.”
