In late 2014, financial website 24/7 Wall St. confirmed that Houston homes, in true Texas fashion, are among the largest in the nation. In a separate but still complementary report, the American City Business Journal (ACBJ) elaborated on home size in Houston, finding that even in a city with a median home size of 1,900 square feet, some areas still manage to stand out as large.
What ACBJ’s list revealed was that the city’s biggest deposits of large homes – which the Journal described as any home with nine or more rooms – could be found in neighborhoods, and particularly villages, close to the urban core; a result of corporate higher ups preferring the areas for their families.
It was surprising to see so few suburban markets represented in ACBJ’s list – Sienna Plantation and Fulshear made the rankings – but the Houston Business Journal explained in its coverage of the report that while master-planned communities such The Woodlands and Friendswood do tend to have larger homes, the average size is offset by a sizable stock of “traditional-sized homes, patio homes and townhomes” that often attract empty-nesters.
Here’s ACBJ’s full top 10 list:
- Piney Point Village: 82 percent of homes with nine or more rooms
- Hunters Creek Village: 73.4 percent
- Bunker Hill Village: 71.5 percent
- Taylor Lake Village: 51.3 percent

- Weston Lakes: 49.3 percent
- Fulshear: 46.5 percent
- Greatwood: 45.8 percent
- Southside Place: 43 percent
- West University Place: 41.8 percent
