Move over, New York and Los Angeles. According to a recent report from moveBuddha, three Texas cities will replace New York City, LA and Chicago as the most populous cities in the country.

moveBuddha analyzed census data and growth rates from the past decade to project what the United States will look like in 2100 — that’s 77 years from now. Based on these projections, Dallas, Houston and Austin will take over as the most populated cities.

Dallas, which currently ranks fourth in terms of population, is poised to come out on top: if the metro’s current growth rate is sustained, the city will be home to nearly 34 million residents by 2100.

Houston, currently ranked fifth, is positioned to follow closely behind Dallas. The Bayou City’s estimated population for 2100 is over 31 million. For comparison, that’s roughly the same population as Tokyo.

While migration into Austin has slowed in 2022, the city still has an impressive record of growth from the past decade. If the city follows population trends similar to that of the time period from 2010 to 2020, Austin will be the third-most populated city in America by 2100 with over 22 million residents.

moveBuddha also predicts that Phoenix, Atlanta and Washington, D.C., as well as the Florida cities of Orlando and Miami, will join Dallas, Houston and Austin in the top 10 most populous cities. New York City will slide to No. 5, while Los Angeles will drop to No. 7.
