Texas has some of the lowest energy costs in the country

by Emily Marek

Electricity prices rose 6.2% in 2023 and show no sign of slowing down any time soon. However, Texas ranks as one of the U.S. states with the lowest overall energy costs, meaning major savings for Texans.

WalletHub analyzed energy costs for every state in the country, taking into account monthly costs for electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating-oil. Texas ranked 47th in the country — meaning it’s the No. 4 cheapest state when it comes to monthly energy costs, beat out only by Kansas, Arizona and New Mexico.

The average Texas household will spend $437 per month on overall energy costs. Broken down, that’s about $186 for electricity, $88 for natural gas, $160 for motor fuel and $2 for home heating-oil.

On the flip side, the state with the highest monthly energy costs was Wyoming. There, the typical household will spend $1,591 per month on energy utilities and other fuel-related fees.
