What was your first job in the realty industry?
A RE/MAX agent while I was in law school. I learned about investment properties, so I got my license to purchase investment properties and then ended up selling homes to all of my classmates as they graduated while I was studying for the bar exam.
Where did you grow up?
Everywhere. My father was in the Air Force, so we lived everywhere from England and Portugal to Massachusetts and Georgia. Los Angeles was where we landed and I considered home before we moved to Houston.
What is your favorite free-time activity?
I consider myself from Los Angeles – so, what else? Movies, movies, movies.
What do you do to relax when you’re stressed?
Send out a mass invite to everyone to come over and make pizzas and drink wine.
Growing up, what did you want to be?
An entertainment attorney. And I was one!
If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be?
Marilyn Monroe, so I could peek behind the velvet curtain…
Where is your favorite place to hang out?
Any beach with blue water and no access to technology, or going home to Los Angeles and spending time with friends and family.
What do you love most about the industry?
The ability to create your own business in something that uses many parts of your brain including negotiating, staging, marketing and communicating.
How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents?
I have a law degree and an MBA, and I try to put the skills developed as a lawyer and MBA to work for my clients while negotiating on their behalf; and of course, while marketing their properties.
What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
Marketing, marketing, marketing. Selling a house is simply a by-product of marketing yourself to get the client in the first place.
Where do you go to network and meet new clients?
Willow Fork Country Club has been great. My husband golfs there nearly everyday and our friends and fellow members from the club comprise a good portion of our clients. An even better place? The Internet. There are real people out there.
What has been your greatest accomplishment?
I received my JD/MBA as a single mother in three years rather than four years. And of course, passing the California Bar Exam, which is the hardest bar exam in the country, was awesome. Then of course, starting my own real estate firm and doing so well with it has been great.
What was the last good movie you saw or book you read?
On a recent flight back from Italy I watched four movies on the flight home. I don’t know if they were the best ones out or I just thought all four were great, because I was in such a cocoon in the air with no interuptions and no one able to reach me.
What is your favorite restaurant?
Sushi Hana in Katy. We must eat there three times a week, which would be great for my figure if I stuck with the sushi, but I’ve become addicted to the nice fattening rolls.
What is your favorite building in Houston?
My house! We’ve been renovating it for three years and it’s actually starting to take shape. We gutted the kitchen down to the studs and put in 72″ of refrigeration, 4″ concrete counter tops, refrigerator drawers, a trash compactor, two microwave drawers and 6′ Viking wine refigerator. How could this not be my favorite building in Houston?
What kind of car do you drive?
I drive a black Range Rover that looks awesome until you get into it. Then you can see all of the damage I’ve done by throwing big signs in the car, kids kicking the seats and the check engine light that will never go out (and I’ve tried). I drive my cars until the wheels fall off, which I anticipate happening any day now. It makes my husband nuts.
Smartphone, or paper?
Smartphone. What is paper?
What is your favorite city after Houston?
Los Angeles. That’s my hometown. We could never live the way we do here, back home. If you live on a golf course in Los Angeles, you must be rich.
In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry?
Make sure you have a mentor and market yourself unmercifully.
What is your favorite iPhone/Android app?
QR code readers. All of my signs have them. Walk up, scan them and you can see all of the pictures and information on the home you are standing in front of.
Who are your favorite people to follow on Twitter?
My kids and friends, followed very closely by Kim Kardashian and every celebrity that tweets anything mindless.
