Houston ranks in the top half of the world’s best cities

by Emily Marek

Houston ranks as one of the top cities in the world, according to Resonance Consulting’s 2023 World’s Best Cities report.

The consulting firm scored metropolitan areas across the globe based on place, product, programming, people, prosperity and promotion. Within these categories, cities were then ranked based on other factors like weather, outdoor spaces, universities, nightlife, restaurants, labor force income equality, employment rate and internet searches. Houston landed at number 42 on the list.

“Austin may get the attention, but the promise of the Lone Star State drawing Californians and New Yorkers is quietly being fulfilled in Houston,” the report says. “In the past year, immigration, both domestic and international, has swelled the metro population to almost seven million — an increase of almost 300,000.”

Houston ranked especially high in categories like Google searches and GDP per capita. The report also noted that Houston has one of the country’s most ethnically diverse populations, with over 145 languages spoken in homes across the city. This diversity contributed to Houston’s ranking as the 26th best city in the world for culture.

Houston also scored well in the restaurant category, with the report noting the presence of authentic Mexican cuisine options.

Houston is the highest ranking Texas city on Resonance’s list.
