Build-to-rent homes — that is, properties built specifically to serve as single-family rentals — are increasing in prevalence throughout the country. In fact, the latest report from RentCafe says that an all-time high of 14,541 single-family rentals were completed during 2022.

Houston is one of the metros with the most build-to-rent homes on the market, ranking third nationwide for the highest number of build-to-rent single family rentals currently under construction and fourth for the amount completed within the past five years.

The number of build-to-rent homes has grown by 60% in Houston over the past five years — 1,875 single-family rentals were added to the market between 2017 and 2022, giving the metro a total of 5,020 total build-to-rent homes on the market. An additional 2,553 build-to-rent units are currently under construction and expected to join the market within the next several years.
