One of the most common reasons for a big move is a new career opportunity. Every year, tons of professionals make the decision to lay down roots in a new city — or even a new state — for the promise of a good job with a good salary.
Houston is among the best cities for job, salary and new resident growth, according to a new report from moveBuddha. The moving analysis company compared U.S. cities with over one million residents based on job growth, unemployment, salaries and moving data to see which areas are attracting the most new residents for job and career opportunities. Houston ranked No. 10 in the country.
According to moveBuddha calculations, Houston had an in-to-out move ratio of 1.22 in 2023, meaning that slightly more people moved into the city than moved out last year. Furthermore, job growth has grown by 2.3% in the past two years while wages have increased by 4.79% across the board. That indicates that jobs and salaries are expanding at a faster rate than population growth, meaning there are still ample jobs available all over the Bayou City.
Dallas ranked at No. 5, with both cities experiencing decreases in unemployment since 2022, further indicating a positive job market in Texas. Houston’s unemployment rate fell 2.6% from 2022 to 2023, while Dallas’s fell 2.9%.
