Metro Houston’s most affordable ZIP codes for renters

by Emily Marek

Some of the country’s most affordable ZIP codes for renters are in the Houston area — including Bellaire, which ranks as the No. 9 most affordable rental ZIP code in the U.S.

According to a report from CashNetUSA, renters in Bellaire (specifically, the 77401 ZIP code) only need to spend 13.68% of their annual income on rent, based on the average rent as a percentage of the area’s median household income. For reference, any proportion over 30% is considered “cost-burdened,” according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Zooming in on Houston proper, Eldridge (77094) is the most affordable ZIP code in the city and the 12th-most affordable in the country, with renters only needing to spend 13.88% of their income on rent. That ZIP code is followed by Greater Heights (77008) at 16.81%, Harris County (77024) at 16.88%, Washington Ave./Memorial (77007) at 18.01% and Harris County (77345) at 18.76%.
