How much homebuyers can save while moving from California to Texas

by Emily Marek

California to Texas is one of the most popular interstate relocation routes in the United States. According to StorageCafe, almost 300 people made the move on a daily basis in 2021 — and the Lone Star migration hasn’t slowed down just yet.

The year 2021 set a record-high for California to Texas moves, with approximately 110,900 people relocating from The Golden State. That’s almost 20% of all people who moved into Texas during the year. On the flip side, only 33,000 Texans relocated to Florida in 2021.

Millennials make up the largest proportion of these movers at 46.3%

There are several reasons for this migration trend, but top Texas perks include the no-income tax policy, a lower cost of living and bigger home sizes on average. Texas is also extremely business friendly, with over 100 companies moving their headquarters here since 2020, 40% of them from California.

There are several direct interstate routes than can save California-to-Texas movers especially large sums of money — for example, those that move from San Jose, California to Dallas can expect homebuying savings of over $1 million, given that the median home price is 258% more expensive in San Jose than in Dallas.

One route with an even larger savings volume is Redwood City to Austin. Those relocators will save $1,274,000 thanks to the 243% price difference between homes in the two cities.
