HAR adds voice-activated function to home search, expanding access to visually impaired and others

by Emily Marek

The Houston Association of REALTORS® collaborated with Lundy Inc. to bring a voice-activated home search tool to its Multiple Listing Service. HAR said it is the first MLS service to use Lundy’s artificial intelligence-driven technology.

Users can now search HAR.com through their Amazon Alexa-powered device via Lundy’s ChatGPT-optimized search engine. Vocal commands like “Alexa, show me homes in my price range,” or “Alexa, contact a listing agent,” will connect consumers to HAR’s listing inventory.

“We believe finding a home should be accessible to all consumers,” said HAR Chair Cathy Treviño. “Buying a home is one of the greatest investments a person will make in their lifetime. With this cutting-edge technology, we can make sure everyone can participate and feel included in the homebuying process.”

According to a 2018 National Health Interview survey, over 32 million American adults have experienced vision loss. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates roughly 12 million people aged 40 and older are visually impaired and 1 million are totally blind. The Amazon Alexa property search feature allows those affected by visual or motor impairments to search for homes online in a hands-free way. All searches are automatically saved, allowing users to pick up where they left off.

“HAR is pleased to work with Lundy Inc. to make searching for a home more inclusive for all consumers,” said HAR President Bob Hale. “This continues our efforts of being at the forefront of the industry’s technological advancements. This innovative technology could redefine how visually impaired consumers buy and sell homes in Houston and across the country in the future.”

Interested users can begin searching with the vocal command, “Alexa, launch HAR.com.”
