Certain Texas cities were identified as some of the best places in the country to raise a family while renting, with one Lone Star community even claiming the top spot.
According to RentCafe, over 68 million renters in the United States live with family. But what factors make a place best suited to the needs of renter families? The rental analysis company looked at metrics such as cost of living, apartment availability and size, local school quality and family-friendly activities to determine which metro area is the best place to live while renting and raising children.
The Dallas-area city of Plano ranked at No. 1 on RentCafe’s list — only 8% of children in the metro live under the poverty line, one of the lowest proportions in the nation. Plano also ranks in the top 3 in the country for local economy, with a 4% unemployment rate and 6% job growth in 2023. And while housing and overall cost of living can be somewhat high in the City of Excellence, childcare costs are actually significantly lower than many other large cities, at $15,530 per year for two children.
Round Rock and Austin followed close behind at Nos. 6 and 7, respectively. The sports capital of Texas and the live music capital of the world rank similarly in quality of life, with relatively large apartments and ample family-friendly amenities to take advantage of in each, like Chisholm Trail Crossing Park and Rock’N River Water Park in Round Rock and the Museum of Ice Cream and Barton Springs Pool in Austin.
The highest-ranking Houston-area city on the list was Conroe, which ranked at No. 20. Housing and cost of living are markedly lower in this suburb than in Plano or Austin, with the metro being 4% cheaper than the average U.S. city. It’s also super cheap to upsize your apartment to an extra bedroom in Conroe, with an upcharge of only $137.
