Weather is becoming an important factor in where Americans choose to live, with 22% of U.S. residents planning an out-of-state move saying that better weather is motivating their relocation, according to a Redfin report.

The findings come as Redfin partnered with The Weather Company on all for-sale listings to provide ZIP Code-level metrics to buyers, including average temperature, precipitation, snowfall, humidity and UV Index.

“Homebuyers are searching for more than square footage and price — they want to know what it will actually be like to live somewhere,” said Ariel Dos Santos, Redfin’s chief product and design officer. “As weather and climate concerns play a bigger role in relocation decisions, we’re bringing that information directly into the home search experience. From conversational search to weather insights, Redfin is focused on helping people discover homes and neighborhoods that truly fit their lifestyles.”

Redfin’s survey found that weather was the most frequently cited reason for moving out of state, topping a list of 29 potential motivations. Concerns about natural disasters and climate risks ranked second, with 21% of respondents saying those issues influenced their decision to relocate.

It’s no surprise, however, that Redfin migration data shows that Americans consistently move from northern parts of the country to the south. Among respondents planning to relocate out of state, Florida ranked as the most popular destination, followed by Texas and California.
