Houston named top moving destination in U.S.

by Lindsey Wells

Relocations in the U.S. surged in 2021 as Americans began searching for cities that accommodated their new pandemic-era lifestyles. An estimated 14-23 million people moved last year, and according to a recent survey by truck rental company Penske, most of them headed towards the Lone Star State.

Texas dominated the company’s top moving destinations list for 2021, with Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Austin ranking in the top 10.

The most desirable cities for relocation in 2021 were:

1. Houston

2. Las Vegas

3. Phoenix

4. Charlotte

5. Denver

6. San Antonio

7. Dallas

8. Orlando

9. Austin

10. Chicago

Most of the cities on the list offer easy access to outdoor recreation, mild weather and a more affordable cost of living. The more popular states, Texas and Florida, also have no income tax, an attractive incentive to move for people living in states with high tax brackets like New York or California.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Houston metro area became home to 69,094 new residents between July 2020 and July 2021, raising its total population to 7,206,841.
