What you need to know about New Homes for Houston, the affordable housing initiative

by Emily Marek

The City of Houston Housing and Community Development (HCD) department recently announced the launch of New Homes for Houston, an affordable housing program.

HCD is partnering with developers to build nearly 4,000 new homes in Houston and, through New Homes for Houston, these will be reserved for families earning up to 120% of the area median income. In Houston, that amounts to $106,300 for a family of four. Most housing programs cap at around 80% of the area median income — in Houston, that would be $70,850 for one household.

Applicants must meet several additional requirements in order to qualify, including a pre-approval letter from a lender and an eight-hour homebuyer education certificate from a HUD-approved agency.

For more information on this program, visit the City of Houston HCD website. The Houston HCD will also be present at the Wells Fargo Advancing Homeownership Fair in July.
