The U.S. South has turned into a hotbed of new-home construction over the past several years, with much of that construction concentrated in Texas. In fact, three of the top 20 cities for new-home construction are in The Lone Star State.

MoveBuddha analyzed new construction data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development to determine the cities with the most new construction relative to population. Most of the top cities are in the southern part of the country with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, ranking at No. 1 with approximately 10,688 new homes per every 100,000 residents.

By raw numbers alone, Houston is the city with the most ongoing construction, thanks largely to the city’s lack of zoning rules. However, relative to population, Houston ranked No. 17 with approximately 1,001 new homes per 100,000 residents.

Meanwhile, Dallas ranked No. 10 with 1,587 new homes per 100,000 people and Austin ranked No. 15 with 1,117 new homes per 100,000 people.
