It’s affordable to remodel in these Texas cities

by Emily Marek

Nine out of 10 homeowners report having underestimated the costs of owning a home, including the expenses related to home maintenance and remodeling. However, many of the least expensive — and most affordable — cities for home remodeling are located in Texas.

Using data from Houzz, Frontdoor calculated the cost of a home remodel, including redoing the living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and dining room, in the most-populated cities in the United States. The southern Texas city of McAllen ranked as the least expensive place to remodel in the country, with a price tag of $54,855. Lubbock also ranked in the top 10 at No. 9, with a cost of $56,444.

On the flip side, Plano ranked as the most expensive city in Texas for a home remodel, with an estimated cost of $66,030.

Of course, cost alone doesn’t tell the whole story of the financial impact remodels have on households. Frontdoor also calculated the most affordable cities in the country for home remodels, taking into account the cost of remodeling all main rooms of the home as a percentage of annual household income.

Frisco ranked as the most affordable city in the country, with a full remodel taking up only 43.51% of the average annual household income. Frisco was followed by Sugar Land at 50.47%. Allen ranked No. 5 at 53.86%, while League City ranked No. 8 at 55.63%.
