As Houston millennials fly the nest, Gen Z is staying put

by Emily Marek

Houston saw one of the largest shares in the country of millennials moving out of their parental home in the last five years. According to new data from RentCafe, though, Gen Z isn’t quite ready to “fly the nest” just yet.

In some ways, the millennial move-out is long overdue: Millennials have moved out of their parents’ homes at much slower rates than Baby Boomers and Gen Xers. Only 18% of Baby Boomers and 17% of Gen Xers still lived at home by the time they reached age 32. Today, 20% of millennials still live with their parents.

However, Gen Z is moving even slower: At age 22, 66% of millennials, 65% of Gen X and 61% of Baby Boomers still lived at home. However, about 68% of Gen Z still live with their parents today.

In Houston, 47% of millennials moved out of their parental home in the past five years, with 19% still stuck at home. That means they’re moving out slightly faster than millennials in other metro areas.

By comparison, 73% of Gen Z Houstonians still live with their parents. While that’s down 19% from five years prior, it’s still the 18th-highest share in the United States, well above the national average of 68%. So, while Gen Z is taking longer to move out than previous generations, Houston Gen Zers are taking even longer.

Furthermore, 58% of Gen Z respondents across the country said they plan to continue living with family for another year, while 33% said they’ll continue to do so for another two to five years. Fewer than 10% of respondents said they plan to keep living with family for another five to 10 years, or more.
