by Emily Marek

The Woodlands, Sugar Land and Missouri City rank among the U.S. cities where housing inventory has grown the most since 2005, according to a report from StorageCafe.

Inventory in The Woodlands grew more than in any other city in the Houston area, with 47,600 units available in 2023. That represents an 84% increase from 2005 — the third-largest jump in the country. That figure includes single-family homes as well as rental housing units — in fact, The Woodlands’ rental supply increased by 273% during that time period, while single-family homes increased 90%.

Sugar Land had the second-most growth in the Houston area and the fifth-most in the nation — its inventory grew by 83% from 2005 to 2023, with 38,000 housing units available.

Also on the list at No. 33 nationwide was Missouri City, which had 27,758 housing units on the market in 2023, a 51.87% increase from 2005.

All of greater Houston’s major cities collectively added over 270,000 units to the national housing supply from 2005 to 2023.
