Nearly half of homesellers don’t know they pay the buyer agent’s commission

In the wake of landmark lawsuits against the National Association of REALTORS® and major real estate brokerages, the future of buyer agent commissions hangs in the balance. For now, though, the burden of buyer agent commissions rests with the listing side.

According to new data from Clever, though, many homesellers don’t realize this. The real estate tech company conducted multiple surveys of thousands of Americans and found that 42% of homesellers mistakenly believe that buyers directly pay their agent’s commission fees.

That number shoots even higher, to 66%, among non-homeowners.

Meanwhile, 55% of sellers believe they shouldn’t be responsible for covering the buyer agent’s commission and 34% overestimate the expenses. Just 11% knew that the typical commission rate, split between the buyer and seller agents, is 6%.

A whopping 91% of homeowners said avoiding high commission rates is a top priority when selling, with 28% of sellers saying they worked without an agent entirely to save on those fees. However, according to another recent Clever study, more than half of sellers who did not use an agent in their home sale wished they had.
