The top exterior renovation trends in Houston

by Emily Marek

Nationwide, homeowners are most likely to spend money on a fresh coat of paint to upgrade the exterior of their house. But can the same be said for Houston residents?

According to the 2023 U.S. Houzz & Home Study from home design website Houzz, exterior renovations were a priority for homeowners last year. The company surveyed over 25,000 homeowners in the 30 largest metro areas in the country and found that two in five don’t ever plan on moving out of their current home — but given that the median U.S. home is 42 years old, many are in need of a facelift. And because those homeowners aren’t planning on moving, they have the confidence — and the funds — to invest in the exterior of their home.

Exterior paint does, in fact, reign supreme in Houston: 30% of Houston respondents invested in fresh exterior paint in 2023, the highest proportion of any exterior renovation. Paint was also the top exterior renovation project in 11 other metro areas, with residents mostly likely to repaint in Miami at 38%.

Paint was followed by new gutters or downspouts at 28%, updated windows or skylights at 24%, new exterior doors at 24% and new roofing at 22%.

Across the U.S., homeowners were least likely to upgrade their chimneys at only 8%. Similarly, only 5% of Houston homeowners undertook a chimney upgrade last year.
