The average size of a Texas home is 2,158 square feet, giving the Lone Star State the 13th-largest homes in the country, according to data from NetCredit. 

That puts Texas squarely in the top half of all states when it comes to home size. In comparison, the largest average home size in the country is found in Wyoming at 2,627 square feet, while the smallest is found in Pennsylvania at 1,576 square feet. 

Looking at specific large cities in Texas, The Big D lands on top: Dallas homes run an average size of 2,279 square feet, making them the largest of any major city in the state and the eighth largest of any major U.S. city; Fort Worth ranks No. 13, with an average square footage of 2,141, followed by Houston at No. 15, with an average square footage of 2,122. 

Given Texas’ average home size, buyers in the state pay an average price per square foot of $210. That’s relatively affordable compared to states like Hawaii and Massachusetts, where the average price per square foot is $850 and $732, respectively. 

The most affordable price per square foot in Texas is found in Beaumont, to the northeast of the Houston metro area. There, the average price per square foot is just $126.62, making it the 17th-most affordable city in the country. The city with the cheapest price per square foot in the country is Jackson, Mississippi, at $88.58, while the most expensive is Sunnyvale, California, at $1,046. Boston and Santa Clara, California also have an average price per square foot of over $1,000.
