Every week, we ask a real estate professional for their Short List, a collection of tips and recommendations on an essential topic in real estate. This week, we talked with Melissa Seureau, Broker/Owner of Busy Bee Realty in Cypress, TX who talks about her unconventional networking spots.

5. Participating in Sports: I’ve sold a home to every person on my softball team. It’s a soft sale, they know what I do because I wear my Realtor baseball cap, and everyone loves to ask questions about real estate.

4. Builders Association: Every Realtor who joins the builders association tries or wants to get in with a builder to list their properties, etc. When I go to the Association’s meetings, I know that there are 100 other types of vendors that may need a Realtor and those are the relationships I want to grow and nurture. It’s a referral based group, so of course they’re going to think of me when they have a client or friend who is buying or selling.

3. Bars/Restaurants: I frequent a local restaurant and always sit at the bar and hang out with my hubby and favorite bartender. Not only does my bartender know everybody’s business, he can clue me in and introduce me to his other clientele as his Realtor. I always make sure to tip him well as he’s a great resource for my business. I’ve also met tons of other patrons that have become clients just by being friendly and helpful.

2. Church: Being involved in church is not only good for your soul, it’s great for your business! I’ve been able to be a blessing to my Pastor who was transferred to another city and we leased her home, as well as to others in the congregation that trusted me to help them when it was needed.

1. Homeowners Association: It’s a lot of work being on the HOA of your neighborhood, but I find it very rewarding! It can be a mess when the HOA files suit on a homeowner, and I like to contact the homeowner and have them attend the meeting. I find that there’s always a win-win situation that can be established, and it’s easier than paying an attorney to get in the middle of your dispute most of the time. In addition to being helpful, I like that I get to know my neighbors; they always come to me when they need to know about a home selling and it’s expected closing date, and this is how they collect a lot of their delinquent dues. I’ve been able to help multiple neighbors sell their homes and it helps me be perceived as the neighborhood expert. Our end goal is to ensure the values in the neighborhood go up and that it’s a pretty and pleasant place to live.
