Houston Agent (HA): Though cold weather isn’t too much of a problem, winter and chillier weather is approaching. What advice can agents give to homeowners in regards to weatherizing their homes?
Rainbow International (RI): As temperatures drop and cold weather conditions linger, homeowners must protect their home against potential damage and heat loss.
- Remove leaves and other debris from gutters so winter rain and melting snow can drain. Ice dams can form when gutters and drains clog. This can cause water to back-up and freeze which often leads to water seeping into homes. Look for leaks and misaligned pipes in gutters and make sure downspouts are carrying water away from the foundation.
- Seal ducts to prevent air from escaping. Schedule a technician to test your duct system and repair any problems. Properly sealing air ducts can save homeowners money and ensure the home is heated efficiently.
HA: Indoor air pollution, while little known, is still a major danger for homeowners across the country. How can buyers and sellers keep their homes safe?
RI: Most people associate pollution with the outdoors. Yet, surprisingly, the air inside homes and offices is often two to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
- Pay attention to the signs of indoor air pollution: irritated eyes, nose and throat, headache, fatigue and dizziness.
- Change the furnace filter regularly and choose a high-efficiency filter that can trap the smallest particles.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals with harmful fumes. Instead, choose nontoxic cleaning products.
HA: Staying in the same pollution vein, what are some specific measures agents can take to make sure a property isn’t growing any dangerous mold?
RI: It only takes 24-48 hours for mold to grow and spread on walls, windows, drywall, carpets, ceiling tiles, insulation, and furniture.
- Get to the exact source of the mold problem with proper assessment from a professional.
- Clean the air with proper filtration to remove mold spores and particles.
- Dispose of porous materials and belongings contaminated with mold and clean nonporous materials.
