by Houston Agent

Based on new figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau, Houston remains the fourth-largest city in the U.S.

The census found Houston’s population was 2,257,926 in 2009, which is up from 1,972,727 in 2000, when the previous decennial census was conducted. At that time, Houston was also listed as the fourth-largest city in the country.

Results from the 2010 census, which was conducted in April, will not be released until early next year.

With a population of 8.39 million, New York City, remains the largest city in America. Coming in second is Los Angeles with 3.83 million, with Chicago following at 2.85 million. All three cities had the same ranking in 2000.

The only city to join the top 10 is San Jose, which was ranked No. 11 in 2000. It is now 10th, having jumped Detroit on the list, which is now in 11th place.
