Houston is largely an affordable place to live and work, but some areas of the city are pricier than others. Of course, when it comes to housing in Houston, you get what you pay for. And for home security, Houston boasts low crime rates and plenty of other perks in its pricier neighborhoods. The following are six of the most expensive zip codes in Houston, along with the benefits homeowners can expect from living in those areas:

77019

Located just south of the Memorial Park Golf Course, this zip code is home to Houston’s River Oaks, Avalon Place and Hyde Park neighborhoods. It’s long, horizontal shape extends into downtown Houston, where residents can enjoy fine dining, great shopping and plenty of musical entertainment. Of course, living so close to the city’s exclusive downtown area comes at a price, specifically $238 per square foot. Several homes located in this zip code sell for more than $1 million. But for that price, homeowners get some of the best home security Houston has, as well as some of the most beautiful architecture in the entire city.

77030

It is not unusual for homes to be listed for more than $700,000. Benefits of living in this neighborhood include quick access to the acclaimed Lamar High School and the beautiful Levy Park.

77027

Just west of the 77098 zip code described above, 77027 contains several neighborhoods with names boasting of oak trees. These include Oak Estates, Afton Oaks and Royden Oaks. Nearby attractions include the Memorial Park Golf Course, the River Oaks Country Club and the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. The price tag for all this? Expect to pay around $228 per square foot.

77024

A larger zip code area located on the northwest side of Houston, 77024 boasts some of the fanciest and most expensive homes. The median price per-square-foot in this area is a cool $244. Several neighborhoods are nestled within the 77024 zip code, including Whispering Oaks, Frostwood, Fonn Villas and Memorial Forest. Transportation is simple, with Interstate 10 and Highway 90 bordering the zip code to the north, as well as several buses offering public transit throughout the area.

77005

Last but certainly not least on the list of pricey zip codes is 77005, a southwest area that includes such neighborhoods as West University Place, Southampton Place and Southside Place. The median cost per square foot in this zip code is $264. The size of homes can vary, but many span over 4,000 square feet. Although these homes are on the pricey side, their proximity to good school, beautiful parks and other excellent amenities makes the investment more than worthwhile.

I believe that 77024 is on the West side of Houston and not considered NW, but south of I-10 and west of Loop 610 and N. of Buffalo Bayou. Hunters Creek, Piney Point and Bunker Hill Villages and should be included among these pricey “Memorial” area properties, not just Fonnvillas and Whispering Oaks.

  • Penny Richey says:

I find it interesting that 77056 zipcode wasn’t included as one of the pricier upscale neighborhoods with the sold average home prices in 2012 of $260/sf. The area includes Tanglewood which is certainly considered one of the most upscale neighborhoods in Houston.

Thanks for the info. Lane and Penny both make good points. When people see zip code 77024, they typically think of the Memorial Villages. Per MLS, the average price per square foot for single family homes in 77056 last 12 months was $291.

  • Shirley says:

    good info

  • Charlie Eskridge says:

I-10 is “SOUTH” of 77024 – I think you have it confused with 77023 which has the villages.

  • Greg LaRue says:

Great list! Also consider our neighborhoods in 77079 where the demand is high and the commute convenient to West Houston’s growing Energy Corridor. Several new homes have been built in the past few years, lots of new construction at present, and the existing homes and lots have continued to increased in value. Low availability and high demand for these beautiful homes zoned to Spring Branch Schools like Memorial Middle make this area attractive to families. Other nearby attractions to Memorial West neighborhoods: CityCentre shopping area and eateries. Edith Moore Bird Sanctuary with it’s mature oaks, wildlife and nature tours. Terry Hershey Hike & Bike trails. Memorial Herman and Texas Children’s Hospital West.
