Having spent 30 years as a photojournalist in Puerto Rico, Mariel McHugh covered everything from local news to the Miss Universe pageant before moving to Houston and discovering real estate photography. When she and her husband relocated to Houston and began searching for a home, she stumbled across real estate photography — and recognized immediately that her lens could serve a new purpose. In 2023, she launched Nova Images, to which she brought 30 years of photographic experience.
McHugh is joined by lead photographer and videographer Alexander Mirabal, a Houston-based visual professional with more than a decade of experience in photography, videography and media production. The team also includes Kelly Baez, a photographer with over four years of experience specializing in both real estate and weddings. Based in Houston, the team covers the entire surrounding area. They provide a full range of services including high-end photography, drone video, Matterport tours and social media content.
What ties the team together is a shared belief that the work matters beyond the transaction. McHugh knows that moving is emotional and difficult. She started Nova Images because she loves the idea of helping people and making that process just a little bit easier. Before any shoot, the team connects with the client by call or text to understand the specific needs of that property. Clients consistently describe the work as high-quality, reliable and detail-driven, and more than a few note it’s actually enjoyable. Most business comes through a loyal client base and steady referrals.
Since opening, McHugh has been building Nova Images into a recognized name in a competitive major market, landing prominent area clientele while navigating the daily unpredictability that comes with running a growing business. Every day is different — and that suits her just fine.
